Grounding Issues and Noise (Yashoda Hospital)

ABSTRACT

Electrical noise is one of the common power quality issuesthat affectcommercial and industrial establishments. Noise can be classified in common mode and differential mode. Common mode or differential mode noise can have negative impact on operation of electronics and communication system. Noise also disturbs the quality ofoutput fromaudio/video systems.

Noise, common mode or differential mode is generated through electromagnetic interference (EMI), radio frequency interference (RFI) and grounding loops. In today’s digital economy, generation of noise cannot be avoided but with good design practices particularly grounding, ill effects of noise can be eliminated. Grounding plays very important role in elimination of noise. Improper grounding can cause increased voltage at neutral to ground resulting in malfunctioning of the sensitive equipment.

The case study shows financial impact of noise in a medical facility (Hospital). The hospital was not able to operate an ultrasound machine as image on the monitor was blurred to an extent that it was not possible to use it for any kind of diagnostic assesment. As they were not able to use ultra sound machine, hospital was losing revenue on a daily basis. After carrying out detailed study, the cause of the problem was identified and suitable mitigation techniques were adopted to resolve the problem.
